Juan Ramón is continuing his father's life's work.
Finca La Dueña in Dipilto, Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua
At an altitude of around 1,380 m in the mountains of Dipilto, Nueva Segovia, lies Finca La Dueña – the farm of Juan Ramón and his family.
Sadly, the family lost their father – the founder and visionary of the farm – a few years ago. The pain of his loss is still felt today, but so is the pride in carrying on their father's life's work.
Today, they cultivate the Pacamara, Marsellesa, Parainema, Gesha, Sarchimor, and H1 varieties on the finca. The coffee we have from them this year is the H1 – a cross between Rume Sudan and Sarchimor. Rume Sudan provides complexity, while Sarchimor provides resistance, allowing for more reliable harvests.

Packaging: Bus in a roadside parking lot on the way to Finca La Dueña
On our way to Juan Ramón and his Finca La Dueña, we spotted an old bus in a parking lot and stopped briefly for a few photos. The vibrant colors, their combination, and the bus’s retro look grabbed us immediately – a total vibe, right in the heart of Nicaragua.

Just as we were about to drive on, a man approached us—visibly anything but thrilled about our brief stop. After some unproductive back-and-forth in three different languages and a lot of placating body language, we finally managed to get back into the car unharmed and continue on our way.
